Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love

On December 24, 2018, LAC students and teachers visited the people of Malecaj, a village community in
Lezha to distribute Christmas packages.
The name Malecaj for most Albanians is associated with the communist internment camp that was
located in this town during the communist regime. Few know and are shocked to discover that those
communist facades built to imprison dissidents now house one of the poorest Albanian communities.
The communist regime strategically built their camps in isolated, difficult terrains to alienate their
prisoners from the rest of the society and to use them as workers for public works. Following the
overthrow of the communist regime, the buildings were privatized; once these camps were stripped of
their former role, the new habitants found themselves cut from all government and market
infrastructure. As a result, all of these people are uneducated and unemployed. Though they live on
farmable land, the weather is unpredictable and the fields are flooded with no prior notice. In other
words, these people live in structural poverty with ridiculous financial assistance from the government.
Once the LAC leadership heard about this community, they knew what they would be doing this
Christmas. All students and teachers were asked to bring canned food and clothes which were then
packaged into family boxes. The Cornerstone church joined the initiative and distributed a portion of
their yearly children boxes to the children of Malecaj.
Both sides were touched by the encounter: the people of Malecaj by the kindness of strangers,
overjoyed about good holiday foods, new clothes, and gifts, while the people of LAC were moved by the
conditions they saw, challenged to rethink their lives but in good spirits to know they had done a
beautiful thing on Christmas Eve.
LAC believes in planting seeds. In reaching out to this community, LAC has planted a seed that may grow
into beautiful things in the future. Keep the people of Malecaj, LAC and Lezha in your prayers this
